JUNE 12th In view of the public holiday, the monthly Social Club activity was held the following Saturday. Twenty students from INTI Leo Club participated in the activity and they also donated some cash, shoe racks and cooking pot. 12-16th PKIK participated in the Rotary International Conference in Singapore to promote its' activities & services. We were represented by the Centre Director and a student. Greater awareness was created where some clubs expressed interest to extend their community services to PKIK. 15th A group of ten Rotarians and spouses from Rotary Club of Chigasaki, Japan visited the Centre. 18-20th Three DTP students and a teacher went to the Self-Advocacy camp organised by Dignity & Services. The camp was to promote free communication and self expression among students. Our students enjoyed themselves very much. 19th A busload of children, parents and staff visited the Service Centre of Special Education Department in the Ministry of Education. There was a solid three hours discussion on the plight of the special children with no school to go with the Deputy Chief Director. MAY 3rd Our children were invited by the Spastic Children Association to attend the Broadway Musical Show "Neighbourhood" at the Sunway Resort Hotel, PJ. It was a very entertaining show. The parents helped out by driving some of the students in their cars. 14-16th The CARE Exhibition organised by Majlis Kebajikan Masyarakat Selangor was held at the Subang Parade concourse in PJ. PKIK had a booth to put up exhibits and sell food-stuffs and items. The Centre was able to raise some funds & of course greater awareness was also created during first time. Our special thanks go to the parents for sponsoring cookies, cakes and kaya for sale; and parents & staff for being on duty during the 3 days. 15th The SGA Group of the Production Section of Hitachi Consumer Products Sdn Bhd came to do a gotong royong at our Centre. They gave our fence wall, playground equipment, EIP tables a new coat of paint and cleaned our lawn and canopy. They also donated some books, toys and a whiteboard. This is not the first time that they have shared with us. They have raised funds on two other occasions; in 1996 and for our Food&Fun Fair last year. 19th A local newspaper reporter visited our Centre to do a write up on PKIK. 25th The Association of British Women in Malaysia represented by the Chairperson and some members were at our Centre to present a donation to our Centre for the sponsorship of several items for the Centre. Although it was the school holidays, some of the DIP students were at the Centre for work skills training and the visitors were able to watch them at work. Press releases have been sent out to various newspapers to cover this cheque presentation ceremony. 29th Fifteen DTP students and three staff went to Amcorp Mall in PJ for a hepatitis screening arranged by the PJ Community Centre which will also arranged for free jabs for those who need their after the blood test results. APRIL 1st Nine EIP children, their parent, caregivers and teachers went to Tumble Tots for a demonstration workout. The children had a very enjoyable time there. As this is a business enterprise it is not able to entertain our request for regular visits. 3rd During this monthly Social Club meeting, a DTP student celebrated his birthday by holding a simple tea party for the members. 5th The non-Muslim DTP group was invited for a vegetarian lunch by a student's mother at a local temple in Jalan Reko. They were also given an angpow each. 15th The Chairman & Centre Director attended the launch of the Fund-Raising Workshop at the British High Commission. The Workshop to be held from 14-16 May is sponsored by the British High Commission. The Centre Director will be attending the workshop. 23rd The Vice-Chairman & Centre Director attended the 2nd workshop to promote Campaign'99, a conference in line with the Asia Pacific Decade for the Disabled which ends in 2002. Campaign 99 will be held from 29 Nov to 3 Dec. MARCH 10th Nineteenspecial children, five teachers and several parents from SK Sg Kantan paid a visit to our Centre in the morning. The aim of their visit according to the teacher-in-charge was to network, see how they can co-operate and share information as well as to return our earlier visit to them. Our EIP teachers prepared a simple programme where the children joined in the singing, time in the playground, art and some table activities. A little tea party was also prepared for them. 10th We have a slight disruption in the office when lightning struck our telephone and photocopier. The photocopier was repaired a week later with parts donated by a technician who has been servicing our photocopier, free of charge. 15th On Monday the EIP session was closed to enable our EIP teachers and some parents to attend a Workshop on Attention Deficit Disorder by Adjunct Professor from the University of Idaho. This highly interesting workshop was organised by Malaysian Care. The talk on brain chemistry was especially enlightening. 17th What do we do with vandalism? In the afternoon a young guy was seen throwing coloured bulbs into our compound. 18th Six windowpanes in the kitchen were smashed. A police report was made and the Inspector told us to report if it happens again. And it did, twice, once on 19 of March and another on 30th during which 5 panes (4 in the kitchen and 1 in the EIP room) were smashed. The Inspector has been informed. 22nd A small girls mother and her neighbour came to our Centre to hand over her cash donation from her angpows to our Centre. FEBRUARY 2nd The staff and a few students went to the Chairman's house for Hari Raya lunch. 4th Vice-Chairman brought some friends to visit our Centre. They had earlier donated an air-conditioner for our DTP class. This time they donated some money for the purchase of reference books for our library. 6th Our students were invited to the UKM, thanks to the group of 10 UKM undergraduates who were at our Centre for their 10 days project (once a week). They organised a Hari Raya&Chinese New Year celebration at the campus. The rain did not deter our children from enjoying themselves. The sumptuous meal included satay, meehoon, rendang nasi impit and the festive goodies. A number of games set the crowd reeling with excitement and competitive spirit. The Deputy Dean and a lecturer were present to hand out gifts and green packets to the children. The UKM students also donated a box of books made by them to the Centre. 8th Two lecturers of USM were at the Centre to interview 6 parents in the final part of their research to find out about parents' hope and concern for their child's future. 11th Six students from a private institution, Human Resources Development Institute, undertaking project on social work, for special group were briefed by our teacher on our activities. The Institute works with UPM to conduct Diploma and Masters Programme. 21st A group of students went to the MCA Hulu Langat Open House at the invitation of Adun. Other homes and centres were also invited. Selangor Chief Minister, was present as guest-of-honour to hand out angpows to all the children and inmates of homes. 21st A students family came to celebrate the 7th day of the Chinese New Year with the DTP students. They also made donations to the Centre and gave angpows to the DTP students and staff.
JANUARY 8th Two HVD artists and staff, visited our Centre to know more about our activities. Their visit was highlighted in the China Press on 3 Mar. In the afternoon there was a short filming on our Centre by City Focus. A teacher's friend saw the slot on TV2 a few weeks later. 9th The students above 12 years old came back on Saturday, for leisure activities. A few children on the waiting list also joined them. 26th It was a cool and fun day for 20 students accompanied by 5 staff and some parents to the Genting Resort. The students were entertained to a sumptuous meal. The Vice-President of PR was also at hand to give away gifts to all of us. 27th UKM student studying paediatric optometry carried out an interview to find out about our activities and the visual impairments of some of our children. 31st The members of a temple in Sentul, our regular supporters, gave the children a treat to the Zoo. A whole bus load of students, parents and staff spent the morning and afternoon walking around different sites, going on the train ride, seeing the elephant show while lunch was KFC chicken and meehoon. While the younger ones stretched their parents' physical strength to the limit our older students were energetic even by the end of the day. |
